The Right Tree in The Right Place

The most recent carbon credit auction saw the price per tonne exceed $60. Many hill country landowners have been “watching this space” and have now become aware of the opportunity that reafforestation presents to gain greater income than from traditional livestock farming on the steeper and less productive parts of their farms. You may be aware this is a controversial subject within farming communities because of the potential to create large scale land use change on hill country leading to de-population of rural areas once they are converted to forest.

This situation has also sparked an uptake in enquiries to our fencing team.

Planting along waterways can have benefits by creating protective wildlife habitat and also reducing the sediment into waterways, particularly if left as permanent forest.

Whilst TFBT doesn’t have funding to directly help landowners with planting, we are interested in helping landowners to access reliable information on planting permanent native species and how that links to the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).

If you have a fencing project to exclude stock from your waterways in mind, get in touch with us and we’ll try to connect you to the best information for your project.
