New Mount Tamahunga Traplines to Protect Kiwi

Building on the success of our schools programme, The Forest Bridge Trust are aiming to get more keen young people and families in the community involved with maintaining local traplines. A group of students and their families met in early July for training on predator recognition, safe trap setting and baiting with a view to take over 3 trap lines around Mount Tamahunga. These trap lines have been established to help protect the kiwi population being translocated to the Maunga by Tamahunga Trappers in early 2022.

Two of the planned family lines run along unformed paper roads off Rodney Road: one that heads towards the summit of Tamahunga and one down to Schollum Road – as shown in the map below. If you would like to assist with looking after these traplines, please contact us as admin@theforestbridgetrust.org.nz.

The Forest Bridge Trust would like to offer our most grateful thanks to Beth Houlbrooke at the Rodney Local Board and to Auckland Transport for facilitating the approval for trapping lines on these roads.
